Phillies Crush Braves 10-2

Roy Oswalt (2-0, 2.25 ERA) pitched six strong innings for his second win of the season.  Oswalt allowed five hits and two runs – one earned – while walking two and striking out two.  This was Oswalt’s first career victory against the Braves.  Prior to this game, Oswalt had been 0-3 in nine games (eight starts) with a 6.21 ERA in his career against the Braves.

Brian Schneider is greeted by Raul Ibanez after hitting a two-run home run against the Braves

Catchers Brian Schneider (1/2, HR, 2 RBI) and Carlos Ruiz put on a bash brothers display in leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-2 victory over Atlanta Braves.  The victory improved the Phillies’ record to 6-2.

Schneider (1/2, HR, 2 RBI) and Ruiz (2/2, HR, 5 RBI) combined for two home runs and seven RBIs; Ruiz hit his first career pinch-hit home run – a grand slam – to give the Phillies a 7-2 lead in the seventh inning.

Shane Victorino (4/5, SB) raised his AVG to .375 on the season with his fourth consecutive multi-hit game.  Jimmy Rollins (2/5) is currently hitting .333 and now has five multi-hit games on the season.

The offense is having a strong start to the 2011 season, having scored 56 runs in eight games (seven runs per game).  Although there is plenty of season left, the Phillies’ offense is currently silencing its critics who felt they would be weaker without Jayson Werth (free agency) and Chase Utley (injury).

The offense was not the only part of the team which had its detractors.  Baseball pundits and fans alike also questioned the Phillies’ bullpen.  Through eight games, the bullpen has been masterful, having pitched 28 2/3 innings while allowing five earned runs for a 1.57 ERA.  The bullpen is currently averaging 3.58 innings per game.  Of the five earned runs allowed, three were allowed in three innings of work during the first game of the season.  Since then, the bullpen has allowed only two earned runs in 25 2/3 innings (0.70 ERA).

Sunday’s game will feature Cole Hamels (0-1, 20.25 ERA) pitching against Derek Lowe (1-1, 0.77 ERA).  In the 2010 season, Hamels was 2-1 in five starts against the Braves with a 3.97 ERA.  In 19 career starts against the Braves, Hamels is 9-5 with a 3.95 ERA.  In 2010, Lowe went 1-3 in four starts against the Phillies with a 5.04 ERA.  In his career, Lowe is 7-4 in 14 starts against the Phillies with a 3.21 ERA.

Notes

  • The Phillies’ bullpen has a 1.57 ERA through eight games
  • Rollins has five multi-hit games this season
  • Victorino has four consecutive multi-hit games
