The Phillies’ bats continue to betray Cole Hamels. New York Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey pitched a complete game one-hitter.
This marks the second consecutive start in which Hamels suffered a 1-0 defeat. Hamels lost 1-0 in his previous outing against Johan Santana of the Mets.
Over his past six starts, Hamels is 0-2 with a 2.14 ERA. Both losses were 1-0 losses to the Mets. In the one-hit loss to Dickey, Hamels registered the Phillies’ only hit!
Simply put, the Phillies can’t hit knuckleballs. Dickey and Tim Wakefield (Boston) are a combined 3-2 with a 2.16 ERA against the Phillies this season. Perhaps this has 62 year-old former knuckleball pitcher Charlie Hough contemplating a comeback (stranger things have happened).
Thankfully for the Phillies, there are very few knuckleballers in baseball. Nevertheless, I would gladly throw my knuckleballs to their hitters in batting practice every day of the season for half of Ryan Madson’s contract.
